The Cato Letters on Monday, December 17, 2007 6:06:09 PM
I met Mr. Hewitt several weeks ago at a CLS conference in Destin, FL,
whom inspired me to begin a blog of my ideas, concerns, and opinions. I do not
much expect anyone to view what I have to say, and it would certainly be a
wonderful surprise to have comments or criticism to any words I speak. My
blog's name is titled "The Cato Letters". I studied the letters briefly
and they seem to capture much of what I hope to convey here, how much of a
blessing it is to be able to write them, and a small window into my own philosophy
and interests. Wikipedia describes them as:
"144 essays published from 1720
to 1723, originally in the London Journal, later in the British Journel. These newspaper
essays condemning tyranny and advancing principles of freedom of conscience and
freedom of speech, were a main vehicle for spreading the concepts that had been
developed by John Locke. The Letters
were collected and printed as Essays
on Liberty,
Civil and Religious. A measure of their influence is attested by six editions
printed by 1755. A generation later their arguments immensely influenced
American colonists, where it is estimated that half the private libraries in
the American Colonies held bound volumes of Cato's Letters on their shelves.”
They are an interesting bit of literature, and I would recommend anyone
interested in American History, or the history of democracy, to check them out.
I graduated with a Major in Political Science and Religion/ Philosophy and am
currently in Law School. I am a young individual, and if
anyone ever does read this out of interest, I assume it will most likely be in
some way to view today's America
from the eyes of young person not yet a quarter century with a wild idealism
and a thirst for knowledge and truth. In any case I am proud to have become the
newest member of the blogging revolution.
